Play Date for an Artist

Art City Austin

What to do when feeling blocked?  I don't know if you have noticed or not, but I have not been painting or posting much in the last week and the other interesting thing is many artist I follow are saying the same thing, it's in the air, how 'bout you?  It's such a strange phenomenon, I want to paint but just can't seem to do it.  What I tend to do is tell myself I'm lazy and yet I know I'm not a lazy person. Gosh what a great motivator, being mean to myself, yeah so I asked myself how's that going for ya? Not so well.

Moving on to Plan B, thanks to Julie Cameron and her wonderful book, The Artist's Way, she has a cure for this. She talks about having an artist play date with one's self. Instead of being mean to myself, I'm going to show myself some love and fill up my artist's well. So today I went to Art City Austin with my good friend Debbi Smith Rourke.  What a great way to touch all the five senses; this is how the Going Austin web-site describes it:
"Upon entering the temporary art utopia, expect to hear live music from Austin musicians, smell fresh, organic food prepared by local chefs and experience visual art of various mediums."

  2. Yeah, wrote a big comment, then I realized Paco was signed in, not me. Thought you might think it odd that Paco The Pug was commenting on your blog!

Artist Dates are very important, and I've been taking JC's advice (Julia Cameron, not Jesus Christ - oh wait, that doesn't sound right of course I take His advice, but that's another story...) for 15 years. This sounds like a fun day, and you and Debbie look like you're having so much fun! YES. Fill the wells. Enjoy!

  3. Amy, you and Debbi are on the right track! Sounds like a wonderful day! I'm with you about Julia Cameron. I have all her books, have attended one of her lectures, and just love her ideas! She is the best! Have fun on your artist dates, and happy painting!

  6. I like Julia Cameron fans. I am reading "Finding Water" now. I too haven't painted in the last two weeks. I've been going to the library and sitting on the floor looking at home decor books. Changing my space helps me to see and think in a different light.

  7. Funny that spring time would block so many of us at the same time... At this time of year, I get outside as much as possible to paint without thinking about weather or not I feel like it. I know there are only a limited number of nice days so I grab them when I can!
